MORE THAN 100 YEARS IN THE BUSINESS OF FISH PROCESSING

Stavanger Beslagfabrikk, later TRIO, was founded by Fredrik Racine in 1898 in Stavanger, Norway.  In the beginning the company manufactured various ironmongery, locks. and hinges.  In 1902 a patent for a seaming machine was bought.  The market was the local canning industry in Stavanger.  This turned out to be the starting point for a long engagement canning and fish processing for Trio Food Processing Machinery AS.

In the beginning of lat century, Stavanger was the centre for canning in Norway.  More than 60 canning factories were registered in stavanger in 1918.  The number of employees in the canning industry increased from about 1800 to 5000 employees in 1915.  The production was highly labour intensive and the workers worked 10 hours each day, 6 days a week. The processes were manual.  A fast worker could fill a can of sardines in 10 seconds.  the cans were then sealed manually at the rate of one can per minute.

That is why the Reinerts Seaming Machine (named after the inventor) from Trio became so important for the industry. With this invention it was possible to close more cans in one hour than one person could do in a day. Capacity per worker increased from 300 cans to 6000 cans per day.

Reinerts seaming machine claimed international recognition and in 1909 several machines were installed in the city of Lorient in France.  In the years 1920 to 1970 Trio continued to supply machines to the canning industry around the world.

Towards the end of the 1960's, however, the sardine industry was struggling.  To broaden its markets, Trio went into co-operation with the ministry of fishing in Norway to develop a deep skinning machine for herring.  The objective was to remove some of the fat layer under the skin to make the herring fillet more attractive for the consumer.

The project resulted in the first freeze drum skinning machine.  The concept was patented by Trio.  All our skinning machines are based on the FDS "freeze drum skinning" principle; a unique Trio technology for more than 40 years.
